Getting anything done in the business or personal environment requires four things:
- Knowledge - information about subject that is needed
- Process - the way we organize and move ourselves forward; creating momentum, defining done.
- Communication - the way that we discuss items, applying tribal brain power to a task to get answers better than we could supply with single persons mental capacities.
- Trust - shared beliefs in common constructs
Before the Internet, knowledge work happened in one place. A group of people met in a common place for a common time to collect knowledge and enable communication. A hierarchical structure translated objectives into plans and process. Being in the same place allowed us to learn more about individuals, and thus learn how they work, what they do best, and where they need help. Who were good apple and which ones were rotten. It created the environment that made knowledge work possible and even feasible.
But then, BOOM! The Internet happened. And, with the creation of modern broadband systems, outsourcing, placeshifting, and other trends, we now have a very different work environment. We're now spread all around the world, working in all times, in every place. We are mobile. We are nomads.
As this new pattern of work emerges, we are finding our existing systems don't keep up with the new needs. It's now not the water cooler that is our shared space, it's the Internet.
We all desperately need tools that will empower knowledge work given the constraints and opportunities of the 21st century.
To move Enterprises forward, they need:

At a practical level, this new environment needs to have the following capabilities:
- Simple. It needs to be an environment that is easy to use, requires little if any training.
- Secure. The new Enterprise can't leverage the firewall as the "wall" around the electronic enterprise. Tools need to demonstrate and ensure trust that the Enterprise can store critical knowledge securely.
- Comprehensive. The tools provided by the shared space need to meet the "minimum viable" to get work done. If our shared space doesn't provide the right tools, we won't use it because I don't want to synchronize everything I do across multiple systems.
- Fast. We can't wait for the system. The system needs to be there and operational when I need it.
- Self-organizing. The system needs to help us build and capture processes so we don't have to re-create how to do things for every project.
- Intelligent. The system needs to adapt to our work environment, style, and communication behaviors to help us, instead of forcing us to mold to its particular style.
- Fun. As nomads, we need to like to do something, or we won't do it. The system needs to make work more fun and enjoyable.
- Instills meaning. Our system needs to help us instill meaning into our work. If our work doesn't mean anything, then as a nomad I won't be empowered to work on it with all my heart.
