Education in transition: flexibility demands recognised examinations
Education is undergoing rapid change. Flexibility has become more important than ever, with a growing demand for modular learning pathways that align with individual learning needs and with labour-market developments. Training providers must be able to respond quickly to new trends and offer tailored programmes for students and professionals alike.
However, flexibility alone is not enough. Without an officially recognised assessment, programmes lose value. Only by combining flexibility with reliable certification does education lead to meaningful outcomes.
Examengroep responds to this need as an independent and recognised examination provider. Since 1 January 2023, Examengroep has been certified as a provider of a complete range of modular examination products for qualifications, generic components, electives and languages.
The organisation delivers validated examinations that conclude learning trajectories, with a focus on clarity and practical applicability. Candidates, teachers, and assessors are supported with clear assignments and a carefully designed process.
Within this context, Examengroep identified the need for a robust, future-proof examination platform to support this ambition. A platform that is scalable, accommodates a wide variety of examination products and provides certainty in terms of quality and analysis. In Paragin Group, they found a suitable partner, with the products Skillsly and Remindo supporting portfolio assessments, practical exams and knowledge tests in a consistent way.
The challenge: customisation, diversity and growing complexity
Examengroep is a custom examination provider for vocational education (MBO) and operates across a wide range of sectors. The organisation works with hundreds of developers and delivers a broad spectrum of exams, including practical exams, portfolio assessments, and knowledge and skills tests.
This breadth brings complexity. Different examination formats require different processes, while quality, reliability and assurance must always remain central. In addition, Examengroep wanted to take the next step towards further professionalisation and automation, with sustainable growth in mind.
Jeroen van Esch, Director at Examengroep, describes the challenge:
“We develop exams for various contexts. We want one robust foundation that works for all.”
Some exams must remain paper-based due to infrastructure or on-site limitations, though Examengroep aimed to avoid fragmented processes involving loose documents.
“We can’t rely on Word or ad hoc solutions. The process must be right for any exam format.”
The solution: one reliable platform for knowledge, analysis and flexibility
To manage this complexity, Examengroep chose Remindo as its central testing and examination platform. Remindo offers Examengroep key benefits, including robust reliability, flexible exam delivery, and scalability across a wide range of exam types. Remindo is used for knowledge and skills exams, such as reading and listening tests and language exams for various languages.
A key advantage is the ability to assemble exams independently from item banks, combined with extensive analysis capabilities. These benefits enable efficient exam development, ongoing exam improvement, and informed decision-making throughout the assessment process.
“Remindo excels in analysis, which is essential for our reliability.”
The position of Remindo within vocational education also played an important role. The platform is well-known, widely applicable and considered a standard within vocational education.
Implementation went smoothly. The collaboration was experienced as pleasant, with short communication lines and strong substantive support. The user days also contributed to trust and knowledge sharing.
“Remindo’s team truly understands educational assessment. Their analytic and empathetic insights matter to us.”
Examengroep develops all exams centrally in Remindo. From the same system, exams can then be delivered digitally or printed via print-and-scan. This completely eliminated the need for separate Word documents.
“Everything starts in Remindo. We print from there—not the reverse.”
This dual-format approach allows digital exams where possible and paper exams when required.
At the same time, digital assessment offers clear advantages. With Remindo, knowledge and skills exams are easier to adjust, assemble, and reuse from the item bank. In addition, digital delivery contributes to fraud prevention and efficiency.
“Digital assessment is highly efficient. We always have a fallback.”
Through this combination, Examengroep now operates a single, consistent process across all delivery formats. This brings peace of mind internally and reliability for schools and candidates.
The result: higher quality, greater control and a strong foundation for the future
The use of Remindo has led to greater structure and confidence within Examengroep’s examination processes. Through automation and standardisation, workflows have become more efficient, and exam quality has further improved.
Item analysis enables Examengroep to evaluate and refine questions. These insights ensure that exams are stronger from the outset.
“With analysis, we improve items and create better assessments. Quality reflects this.”
Multiple exam rounds have now been successfully completed. The organisation can act more quickly, make targeted adjustments and take well-substantiated decisions. At the same time, internal expertise in test analysis continues to grow.
“In a year and a half, we’ve seen analysis unlock more potential as our knowledge grows.”
Looking ahead, Examengroep sees Remindo as a permanent pillar. During a multi-year pilot phase, the organisation is working towards a fully integrated examination platform, with a horizon extending to 2031. Remindo’s flexibility and its ability to scale alongside vocational education in its full breadth are decisive factors in this choice.
